Rooted in the high-desert landscape.

Rooted in the landscape, the home is a basalt bar of space, gabled in form and reminiscent of regional settler homes. The stone walls provide a warm place to rest in the winter sun while blending into the surrounding field of sagebrush and gnarled piñon pines.

Strategic openings reveal the southern and western horizons. Covered patios and recessed windows connect the home to landscape and sky, while large east-facing windows frame mountain views and the valley below. Wood, stone, and plaster form a restrained interior palette, allowing the changing seasons to shape the experience of the home.

Guiding principles

Modern in material execution, Sagebrush sits in quiet contemplation of its western desert setting on Redlands Mesa. The design extends toward the valley while remaining grounded in the terrain.
